Dry Needling for Lower Back Pain

Dry Needling - WisconsinRecently, a new client came into Back in Motion Physical Therapy with lower back pain issues that just would not go away. Despite being treated by multiple other therapists for traditional physical therapy, she stated her back pain was actually getting worse.

Following a full evaluation, the Back in Motion team determined that dry needling, coupled with manipulation, would be her best course of action.

Dry needling is a form of therapy in which fine needles are inserted into myofascial trigger points (painful muscle knots), tendons and ligaments as well as near nerves to stimulate a healing response for those suffering from painful musculo-skeletal conditions.

It’s not acupuncture, which is concerned with altering the flow of energy, or Qi, for the treatment of diseases. Rather, dry needling is a modern, science-based intervention for the treatment of pain and dysfunction. It’s been proven effective in treating conditions such as shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain, shin splints, plantar fasciitis, headaches and, yes, neck and back pain.

In the case of our patient, the manipulation helped restore the mobility she lost while suffering from back pain, while the dry needling helped break down the muscle spasms while improving blood flow to her lower back. After just four visits, her back pain had been eliminated.
